The High-Impact Resume Section You're Probably Missing

There is one section on a resume that I find incredibly easy to create, yet amazingly high-value for job searchers. Yet, it's the section that I'm least likely to see on a new client's resume.

Almost no one incorporates this section on their resume: Key Skills or Areas of Expertise.

What it is:

A bullet list, columns, or table of skills and knowledge areas. For example: Project Management, Budget Control, International Sales, Team Leadership, Digital Marketing.

Where it goes:

Just below the summary section at the top of your resume. Yes, the top - this section is THAT important.

Why it's so important:

This section is a multi-tasker. Here's everything it does for you:

1) Acts as a Hiring Manager's checklist - with a quick glance recruiters and hiring managers can easily see you meet the qualifications and add you to the short list (if people have to work too hard to see how you're qualified, you'll likely have your resume discarded).

2) ATS Friendly - this section allows you to beat those applicant tracking systems (ATS) that screen-out your resume for not having enough "key words". This section is all about key words and improving your key word density.

3) 5-Minute Resume Tailoring - Customizing your resume and cover letter for each and every job is tedious, time-consuming, and just plain painful. But this section, is easy to alter. If you're applying for positions that are all relatively similar, all you'll need to do is update the key skills section - just swap out skills or expertise that match what you see in the job ad. Boom. Resume tailored.
